Personal Statement #2
Throughout my high school career, I have experienced many different accomplishments and skills. However, there was one accomplishment that has transformed me in many ways joining Future Business Leaders of America. Many frequently ask me why I think FBLA has changed me since all I and the other members do are take tests and attend regular meetings; they do not see FBLA as I do. When I look back at the moment in my sophomore year of high school when I almost missed the deadline to join the club, I realize I did not fully understand just what journey I was signing up for.
I can trace this journey to when I joined AVID late during my 10th grade year and my teacher, Mrs. Wills, told us we were required to join a club and/ or sport. I then began to ask my friends about the clubs they were in and most of them told me they had joined FBLA. I went into the advisor’s classroom and asked her if I could still join. She told me I barely made the deadline. She asked me what event I wanted to compete in. I had no idea what she meant by that, but fortunately, I had my friend by my side and she told me to join Business Communication. I had no idea what that test was about but I signed up for it anyways.
Later that year we were going to have our Central Leadership Conference held here at Lindsay High School. After everyone finished their test, it took a while to correct them all so all members were sent into the gym to wait it out. The awards ceremony began after a few hours of waiting and every category was presented alphabetically, so the results for my competition were not revealed until we were well into the ceremony. When they started calling the top ten people to the front I was truly shocked I placed. They started naming them from 10 to 1 and as they kept going through the list, I was surprised I was not in last place. Then, they announced the person in 6th place: me. I was so excited I almost tripped accepting my award. When it was all over and my mom came to pick me up I showed her my plaque with a huge grin on my face and could not wait until school to inform my other friends on my accomplishment.
After that experience, I knew I if I am good enough to make it to State, something difficult for many students, then I knew I would achieve many things. I never realized I had the ability to go out and join a club I had no prior information on before and coming out being one of the most successful of our Chapter.
